The house suddenly went dark. It was pitch black outside too, and rain pounded against the windows. I was scared.
” I can’t see !” “Mom where are you ?”
Mom called down to me that everything would be okay and that it was a power failure. She said to stay put and that she would get some candles and bring one to me . But I ignored what she said and got up and moved forward.
“Ouch!” I had forgotten that my backpack was on the floor in front of me.
But then there was a click, a flicker of light and then I could see again. The lights were back on. I ran upstairs to my mom and told her that I had been scared because I wasn’t able to see in the dark. Mom agreed with me that it was hard when you were not able to see. Then she reminded me that we should thank God for the ability to see. We talked about what it must be like to be blind and how we can help someone who is blind. Then mom told me a story from the Bible, in John chapter 9, about a blind man who was healed by Jesus. Here is how the story goes…
Jesus was out walking in the city of Jerusalem when he saw a man who was blind. Now in those days, people who were blind were not treated well by others. In fact, blind people were not able to get a job. With no way to get food, blind people usually sat by the road begging for help. Jesus went up to the man and talked with him. Jesus knew that the man had never been able to see. Jesus cared for the man and wanted to help him. So Jesus reached down and picked up some mud from the road and smeared it all over the man’s eyes. Can you imagine what people thought ? This was a very strange thing to do to someone. Jesus told the man to go into the pool and wash off the mud. The man didn’t try to fight Jesus or yell at him. Instead, the man made his way into the pool and washed off the mud. As the mud was rinsed from his face, the man saw light for the first time. He could see perfectly. Jesus had healed the man. The man’s life was changed.
After mom finished telling me the story, she asked me what the story tells me about Jesus. We came up with a few things. First, that Jesus knows all about us and cares for us. In the story, Jesus knew that the man had never been able to see and that because he was blind, he could not get a job. He was blind and poor. The man needed Jesus to heal him. Secondly, that Jesus is all powerful. In this story, He healed a man from blindness so that he could see for the first time in his life. Thirdly, when Jesus asks us to do something, we should do it just as He asks. In the story, the man was asked to do something that didn’t make sense, but he did it and was healed. His life was changed because he trusted Jesus.
Then mom and I prayed and thanked Jesus for His love and care for all of us.
