What is the Bible?
The Bible:
- The Bible is God’s big story of His love for us.
- The Bible is true. We can trust what God says.
- The Bible is a big book that is divided into 66 smaller parts.
- There are two big sections are called “The Old Testament” and “The New Testament.
- The “Old Testament” tells the part of the story before Jesus comes to earth.
- The “New Testament” tells the part of the story after Jesus comes to earth.
- All of the parts fit into the big story of God’s love for us. A holy God wants to have relationship with sinful humans. Our sin blocks any relationship with God. So God sent his Son Jesus to earth to open the way for us. When Jesus died as a sacrifice for our sin, the block of our sin was removed. So if we believe in Jesus, we can have a restored relationship with God.
- All of the parts are God’s word and are true.
- When we read God’s word, we can learn how much God loves us. We can also learn how to live in ways that please God and are good for us.
When you read a portion from the Bible, you might like to ask yourself some questions. Here are some examples:
- Who wrote this portion and to whom is it written? Is there a time period indicated ?
- If it is a story, who are the main characters in the story ? Do you have a favourite character ? If so, why is that character your favourite ?
- What does this portion of the Bible tell me about God ? Jesus? Think about things like characteristics or actions or sayings.
- Are there any instructions or promises for me in this portion ?
- What is the main idea of this portion of the Bible ?
- How can this portion be helpful to me this week ?
